Our Ethos

Fforest Mountain is a 2 acre organic certified market garden based at Fforest Barn Retreat, in the beautiful Black Mountains in Wales. Our ethos focuses on our connection with our natural environment, optimising health and nutrition from soil to seed, plant to person. We work towards the goal of ‘Beyond Organic’ growing, conditioning our seeds and growing space with the microbial life required to maximise nutrient density at harvest. Our produce is available on-site for retreat chefs and holiday guests or through our veg box scheme, delivering to Abergavenny and its surrounding areas.

We grow a diverse range of crops on the farm, with an intensive rotation allowing us variety across our vegetable offering. The soft fruit area supplies a mix of hybrid and heritage berries, alongside our newly established orchard producing seasonal fruit for eating, juicing and preservation. During our Summer months, our cut flower garden truly sparks to life, and arrangements can be ordered by guests or added to veg box deliveries.
As part of our connection to the natural environment, our methods try to ‘close the loop’ as much as possible, managing all aspects of the space. The forested areas of the site provide logs for mushroom production, woodchip and sustainable firewood production. In the garden, we are always looking to minimalise tillage across our space, where beds are topped up with compost made on site, protected by a variety of mulches and fed with a microbe rich compost tea. Manure for our compost comes from our friendly alpacas and a small flock of free range laying hens, whose eggs can be purchased alongside our other produce.
